Why is Medium’s Home Page So Bad?
This is a very short post, maybe so short that it shouldn’t even be a post at all. But I am posting it anyway.
This is my “For you” page on Medium, the main section where I’m supposed to get new content that I might like. I like philosophy, symbolism, and web3, so they got that right.
The problem is… I’ve been seeing this page for weeks. While I do like those topics, I wasn’t particularly attracted to these articles, so I never clicked on them. And yet Medium keeps recommending it. Over…And over…And over…
Did someone ever consider that perhaps if the articles are never clicked, it’s because that the user doesn’t find them interesting? Is it really such a crazy idea to refresh the articles that I am getting?
If I scroll to the bottom, I do get new posts. I have no idea how any of this works. But why would I have to scroll to have the most basic feature? Imagine logging into the main page of Facebook or Twitter and seeing the same posts over and over again, and for you to get anything new, you have to scroll past those posts every single time.
Medium survives by relying on readership, and their main way of getting people (like me) to read on their website is broken in a massive and fundamental way. I’m dumbfounded how they can mess it up this badly. So much so that I feel forced to make this post.
Please fix it.
Thanks.
PS: While not the main problem that I am complaining about here, I’ve also noticed that Medium doesn’t tend to prioritize new articles very much, which makes me less likely to read them. I have countless articles from June. I want to read stuff that’s recent. Some of the content is completely out of date when it’s that old.
